Summer Solstice 21 June: Leadership Coaching – Letting light lead the way toward purpose

Every year around or on 21 June, something rather wonderful happens. The Summer Solstice arrives, gifting us the longest day of the year and a reminder that light has a remarkable ability to reveal what has been hidden. 🌞

For many people, the Summer Solstice passes by as little more than a date on the calendar, perhaps accompanied by photos of Stonehenge and a vague awareness that it stays light until nearly bedtime. Yet for those navigating career transitions, leadership challenges, menopause, redundancy, divorce, or simply a growing sense that life is calling them in a different direction, the Solstice offers a powerful opportunity to pause and reflect.

Leadership coaching is often associated with boardrooms, strategic plans, and performance targets. While these things certainly matter, true leadership begins somewhere much closer to home. It starts with self-awareness.

The Summer Solstice invites us to ask a deceptively simple question:

"What deserves more light in my life?"

Perhaps it is a neglected ambition.

Perhaps it is a hidden talent.

Perhaps it is a dream that has been patiently waiting in the shadows while responsibilities, obligations, and other people's expectations took centre stage.

As women's health educator and coach Maisie Hill notes in her article "Harnessing the Energy of Summer", summer represents a season of expansion, visibility, vitality and outward expression. Rather than shrinking ourselves, summer encourages us to step forward, embrace our energy and share our gifts with the world. 🌻

That sounds wonderfully inspiring, but let's be honest.

Stepping into the light can feel terrifying.

Many of us spend years becoming experts at hiding our brilliance. We downplay achievements, avoid opportunities, and convince ourselves that we're "not quite ready yet."

Leadership coaching often reveals that the biggest obstacle isn't a lack of ability. It's a lack of permission.

  • Permission to lead.

  • Permission to change direction.

  • Permission to want more.

  • Permission to be visible.

The Solstice reminds us that nature doesn't apologise for taking up space. Trees don't feel guilty for growing taller. Flowers don't ask permission before blooming. 🌺

So why do we?

One useful coaching exercise at this time of year is what I call the "Sunlight Audit."

  • Take a sheet of paper and divide it into two columns.

  • In the first column, write down everything currently receiving your time, energy and attention.

  • In the second column, write down what truly matters to you.

  • Compare the two.

The results can be surprisingly revealing.

Many people discover they are pouring sunlight onto weeds while their most important aspirations remain sitting in the shade.

Leadership isn't just about doing more. It's about directing your energy wisely.

Mahesh M. Thakur explores this beautifully in his article "Leadership in the Light of the Summer Solstice: A Call to Grow Your Leadership." He highlights how the symbolism of the Solstice can encourage leaders to cultivate greater clarity, authenticity and purposeful growth, using light as a metaphor for awareness and conscious leadership.

Purpose is one of those words that often causes eye-rolling.

It can sound impossibly grand.

As if we should all wake up one morning clutching a perfectly crafted life mission statement.

In reality, purpose is usually much quieter than that.

Purpose often sounds like:

"I'd like to use my skills differently."

"I want my work to feel meaningful again."

"I want more freedom."

"I want to make a difference."

"I want to feel like myself again."

These gentle nudges are often where significant transformation begins.

The Summer Solstice provides a useful checkpoint. Halfway through the year, we can ask ourselves:

Am I moving toward what matters?

Or am I simply staying busy?

There is an important difference.

Being busy creates motion.

Being purposeful creates progress. 🚶‍♀️✨

Another powerful lesson from the Solstice is balance.

While this is the longest day, it also marks a turning point. From this moment onwards, the days gradually become shorter.

Nature quietly reminds us that growth and reflection must coexist.

This is particularly relevant for leaders, professionals and ambitious women who have spent years proving themselves.

Sometimes leadership isn't about pushing harder.

Sometimes leadership is about creating space.

Space to think.

Space to recover.

Space to listen.

Space to choose.

Kim Marie explores this beautifully in "Soul for Solstice", describing the Solstice as an opportunity to reconnect with inner wisdom and align with our highest potential. She reflects on the importance of pausing, listening and nurturing the deeper parts of ourselves that are often drowned out by the noise of daily life.

I often see this during coaching conversations.

The breakthrough doesn't happen because someone works harder.

It happens because they finally become still enough to hear themselves think. 🌿

If you are feeling stuck this Solstice, consider these simple leadership questions:

What am I ready to stop carrying?

What would I attempt if I trusted myself?

Where am I hiding my strengths?

What deserves more attention?

What does success actually look like for me? Not for my employer. Not for my family. Not for society. For me.

The answers may surprise you.

Leadership is not a job title.

It is not a salary band.

It is not a corner office.

Leadership is the courage to move towards what matters, even when the path isn't fully illuminated.

The beautiful thing about the Summer Solstice is that it doesn't ask us to have all the answers.

It simply invites us to step into the light we already have.

One small step.

One honest conversation.

One brave decision.

One new possibility. ☀️

As the sun reaches its highest point this June, perhaps the greatest question isn't whether you're capable of leading.

Perhaps it's whether you're ready to stop standing in your own shadow.

If you'd like support exploring your next chapter, clarifying your purpose, or building the confidence to lead your life and career with greater intention, coaching can provide the space, challenge and encouragement to help you move forward.

After all, sometimes the most important thing a coach does is hold up a mirror, allowing you to see the light that was there all along. ✨
