FAQ: All About Coaching, Mentoring & HR Support

What is Coaching?

Think of coaching as a partnership with a trained professional — me, the Coach — designed to help you figure out what you want, where you’re headed, and how to get there without losing your mind along the way. It’s about self-discovery, goal-setting, and action planning, all wrapped up in a process that helps you tackle obstacles, challenge pesky negative self-beliefs, and make the most of your potential.

I focus on career coaching, though your life outside work might sneak in here and there — balance is key, after all.

What is Mentoring?

Mentoring is like having a wise friend in your corner — someone who’s been around the block, listened, learned, and can share insights to help you make better decisions. It’s about guidance, perspective, and a sounding board when you need reassurance, direction, or practical tips.

I bring 25 years of HR and people consulting experience to the table, helping you untangle tricky situations, explore options, and move forward with clarity. Mentoring works brilliantly when you want a mix of reflection and real-world advice — and a trusted voice cheering you on as you take the next step.

What is HR support?

HR support is your go-to lifeline when work feels confusing, stressful, or downright uncomfortable. It’s about clarity, understanding your rights, weighing your options, and knowing the likely outcomes — so you can make informed choices with confidence.

My HR support is grounded, ethical, and people-focused. Whether it’s performance concerns, restructures, grievances, or tricky conversations, I’ll help you navigate it all without losing sight of your wellbeing. Think of it as having a knowledgeable ally in your corner — not telling you what to do, but making sure you feel informed, supported, and empowered every step of the way.

How can a Coach or Mentor help me?

A Coach or Mentor can help you tackle all sorts of life stuff — career moves, relationships, personal growth, wellbeing, or simply finding a bit more balance. They offer support, guidance, and gentle accountability to help you spot opportunities, overcome obstacles, and create new strategies that actually work for you.

Is Coaching similar to Therapy or Counselling?

Not quite. Coaching and Mentoring focus on the present and the future — what you can do, how you can grow, and how to get there. Therapy and counselling often dig into the past, exploring emotional healing and mental health challenges.

Coaching complements therapy, but it’s not a replacement. My role as a Coach is to ask the tough questions, challenge negative self-beliefs, and guide you forward. Mentoring, on the other hand, leans a bit more on practical advice and insight.

How long does a Coaching or Mentoring relationship last?

It really depends on you! Some relationships are a few months, others last a year or more. Sessions typically happen once or twice a month. My basic programme is six sessions over three months, but we tailor it to your needs.

Many clients find a Coach or Mentor invaluable through major life changes — and hey, it’s 100% focused on you, so what’s not to love about that?

How confidential is the process?

Confidentiality is at the heart of coaching. Everything we discuss stays between us — unless, of course, I believe there’s a risk of harm to you or someone else, in which case I’d need to involve the right people.

Otherwise, consider it your safe space to think out loud, dream big, and plan your next move.

How do I choose the right person for me?

Choosing a Coach or Mentor is a bit like picking a good pair of walking boots — it needs to fit you. It’s personal, and it matters that your coach aligns with your values, understands your focus, and is someone you feel comfortable with and supported by.

Take your time to explore your options. Most reputable coaches will offer a free 30-minute call — not as a sales pitch, but to see whether you click. Trust your instincts — they usually know best.

One gentle word of advice: look for solid training and professional grounding. I spent nearly two years training with The Coaching Academy, which gave me a strong foundation in both theory and practice. Coaching is nuanced work, and there’s a real difference between someone who calls themselves a coach and someone who truly understands the craft.

Can Coaching guarantee results?

Coaching isn’t magic — there’s no wand involved! It’s a partnership, and the results depend on your commitment, curiosity, and willingness to take action. I can provide guidance, tools, insights, and a nudge (or two), but ultimately, the power to make change lies with you.

Coaching works best when you actively engage and put the strategies we explore into practice — the more you do, the more you get out of it.

What are the benefits of working with a Coach?

Working with a Coach can feel a bit like having a personal GPS for your life — helping you see where you’re going, what’s in your way, and how to get there with confidence. Benefits can include:

  • Clarity on your goals and aspirations

  • Shaking off limiting beliefs and self-doubt

  • Boosting self-confidence and self-awareness

  • Sharpening decision-making skills

  • Increasing motivation and accountability

Simply put, a Coach helps you unlock your potential, take meaningful action, and create positive, lasting change — all at your pace, on your terms.

What is the process for Coaching?
How do I book a session?

It all starts with a 30-minute introduction chat — a relaxed, no-pressure conversation to see if we click. If it feels right, I’ll send you a short prep pack to complete, which includes:

  • A few questions about why you want coaching and your strengths

  • Some logistical info

  • A Wheel of Life exercise to map your priorities

  • A DISC profile (a little psychometric tool to help me tailor my approach to you)

Next comes the “Intake” session 1, where we review your prep pack and set a “long-term” goal for our work together. Each coaching session then focuses on a smaller, manageable “sessional” goal, with five or six actionable steps to keep you moving forward.

The minimum commitment is six sessions, usually every two weeks, though this can be adjusted to suit your needs. Before each session, you’ll complete a prep sheet — this keeps the session structured, focused, and all about you and your progress toward your long-term goal.

Rember: These FAQs are a general guide. If you have specific questions or want to explore your situation in detail, the fastest way to see if we’re a good fit is to chat with a qualified Coach (like me!) — it’s quick, easy, and gives you a feel for how we could work together.
